| The SD Outdoor Expo was selected by the South Dakota Office of Tourism to be one of five Great Events in its Great Events Campaign. The purpose of the Great Event Campaign is to assist event organizers with event promotion with the goal being to increase attendance rates. Applications were judged on the following criteria: 1) potential for growth/visitor appeal; 2) organizer's goals for the future event; 3) organizer's marketing efforts, including examples of past advertisements and press coverage; 4) organizer's tracking of the event; 5) funding; 6) community involvement; and 7) overall impression of the event. From a press release that was released by the Office of Tourism, Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development, was quoted saying, "In a state like South Dakota it is important to recognize the many activities that the outdoors has to offer. The Outdoor Expo is a great example of this and provides outdoor learning opportunities for the next generation; both in state and out of state." Other Great Events are: Redlin Arts Center's Annual Summer Celebration in Watertown, South Dakota Walleye Classic and Festival in Akaska, South Dakota Festival of Books in Deadwood, and Media One FunSki in Sioux Falls.
